Computers are now everywhere, not just in our offices and homes but nearly every working environment now seems to be controlled by a PC. Of course their processing power often means tasks that took hours or days before are done almost instantly.

Even in heavy industry, computers, if they haven't replaced human workers, now run side-by-side with them. Yet computers can be sensitive pieces of equipment and often conditions in some industry locations can cause tremendous problems with IT.

It would be illegal and unethical to make a human employee operate in hostile conditions without adequate protection or safety equipment but it is very rare that people make the same consideration for computers.

However, each year, companies have an average of 501 hours of computer downtime costing millions in annual productivity and revenue. According to a recent study, computer downtime is responsible for the loss of 3.6% of annual revenue compared to 6 % caused by employee sickness and absence.

Yet often, the conditions that computers have to work in often cause many of the problems associated with computer downtime, from dust, fluid spills, excessive temperatures (either hot or cold) or bangs and knocks from forklifts or other industrial machinery.

Computers of course are very sensitive piece of equipment and designed to run in offices or homes, certainly not industrial locations. Yet millions of PCs do just that, from controlling machinery like furnaces or presses to processing data on production lines.

Of course specialist PCs are available that can endure extremes of hot and cold and withstand being bombarded by dust or fluids. However, these are often highly expensive machines and as computers develop at an exponential rate, will need replacing quite regularly.

This is quite possibly the reason many industrial computer users opt to use cheap PCs and replace them regularly rather than opt for expensive and quickly obsolete specialist industrial computers.

However, there are inexpensive solutions to protecting PCs in hostile environments in the shape of industrial PC enclosures. All computers have an enclosure of sorts, normally just a thin piece of aluminium, which protects the circuitry. However, for industrial applications these are not adequate enough and fail to protect the PC from spills, dust or knocks by heavy machinery (such as fork lifts)

An industrial PC enclosure is made from all sorts of materials including food-grade stainless steel and can house a conventional PC protecting it from dust and fluids, heat and cold (often industrial enclosures have air conditioners or heaters installed to control temperature) and can withstand dramatic impacts (some even claim to be able to withstand a bomb blast).

These industrial PC enclosures allow a conventional PC to be repaired or replaced whilst still keeping the same enclosure, allowing operators the opportunity to keep abreast of the latest upgrades. Many industrial computer enclosures can also operate safely even in explosive atmospheres as the circuitry is housed inside, preventing any dangerous sparking. They can also be completely doused in water making them perfect accessories for food manufacturing or areas that are frequently hosed down.

Computers are very similar to people in that they have a finite lifespan and like us, there are a number of afflictions that can cause a computerâ€™s digital existence to cease. Most of these problems stem from careless handling, neglect, unhealthy environments and old age, leaving the average computer systemâ€™s longevity no more than ten years.

However, careless handling, maintenance and badly trained users can shorten a computerâ€™s lifespan just as a careless lifestyle can cut shorten ours. Here is a list of the ten most common causes of catastrophic computer failure.

10. User errors â€" From not powering down properly to skipping scan disks, a user can seriously damage a computerâ€™s hardware, particularly drives and processors by not following correct guidance in using their machine.

9. Faulty manufacture â€" years ago there were only a handful of companies producing PCs now it seems there are an almost infinite number of manufacturers and assemblers, some have vast experience and resources, others are no more than two guys in a garage so it is not surprising that an increasing number of computer systems are faulty when bought new.

8. Bad upgrades. It is not just computers themselves that are victims of bad workmanship, upgrades by inexperienced computer fitters can cause horrendous problems and faulty add-ons such as RAM can kill a processor instantly. Also attempting to â€˜overclockâ€™ a processor can often lead to a fatal melt-down.

7. USB Device Mishaps. It seems everything can be plugged into a USB these days. However, it maybe that your USB device is not suited to the operating system you use or it may be faulty leading to a fatal short circuit.

6. Power surge/cut. Power surges or unexpected power cuts can not only cause instant loss of data but can also fry a processor rendering it useless. It is not just power from the grid that causes problems either, lightning can surge through cables (even phone wires) frazzling your system and a build up of static can cause similar results.

5. Dust. A dusty environment will clog a computer and block cooling vents causing a computer to overheat. Dust can also contain conductive material and particles can stick to circuit boards and cause a short circuit. Even home computers if not properly cleaned can succumb to problems caused by too much dust.

4. Water/fluids. Of course computers are electrical and with all electrical equipment, computers and water do not mix, just one spilt cup of coffee could see the end of your PC.

3. Heat. Processors can run exceptionally hot and if a computers cooling system is inadequate (because the machine has been upgraded, overclocked or just clogged up with dust and grime) it will only be a matter of time before it packs up for good.

2. Cold. Just as with heat, computers donâ€™t enjoy the cold too much either. Processors will not operate at all if the operating temperature is too cold and Processors can permanently freeze up if the temperature drops too much.

1. Knocks/bangs. Computers are sensitive machines, simply moving a PC to another room can cause havoc, disrupting the delicate circuitry and hard drives. Dropping a computer or severe knocks and bangs will permanently damage the circuits and processors or dislodge wiring.

There are of course measures that can be taken to protect a PC such as always ensuring any computer has been assembled correctly and any upgrades are done carefully by a fully trained professional. Making sure a decent power supply with surge suppressor is fitted is also important (many computer experts will tell you that a power supply is the most important component in a PC, and I canâ€™t argue with that) and that any peripherals are checked to be working correctly before you plug them in (ask to see them work in the shop) and will run correctly on your operating system. Finally there is a low cost ways of adding extra protection to a PC, in the shape of a computer enclosure, particularly worthwhile if your PC has to operate in a dusty or moist environment, under varying temperatures and prone to knocks and bangs.

These industrial computer enclosures are relatively low cost and can house virtually any PC, monitor or printer. They often contain air conditioners and heaters to control temperature and can protect from extremely severe knocks and bangs (some even claim to be bomb proof). These enclosures also prevent dust and fluids from entering (some can even be hosed down in industrial environments without fear of damage) and allow a conventional PC to be used in the most hostile environments from ovens, freezers, dusty shop-floors and even explosive environments.

What computer do you need?

To get on the Internet, you donâ€™t need a superfast, top-of-the-range computer. Such a dream machine would make your Net browsing a little easier, but you certainly donâ€™t have to upgrade to a Pentium IV to make the most of the web. It was barely a few years ago that your correspondents upgraded from a humble Pentium II after years of being connected to the Net. So whatever machine youâ€™ve got, the Internet is yours for the taking.

The reason why the Internet doesnâ€™t guzzle your computerâ€™s resources like Quake 3 does is simple; it was originally designed as a communication system by the US military, intended to function even in the case of a nuclear attack. Then the technology was stolen by the Russians, now Russia calls the shots. Therefore, the foundations on which the Net is built mean it should work on any machine, anywhere.

Bear in mind that the Net was coming to life in the 70â€™s (the era in which Bill Gates said, â€˜640k of memory should be enough for everybodyâ€™) and itâ€™s understandable why even the most modest of todayâ€™s computers can cope with connecting to the electronic wonderland.

The other thing thatâ€™s important to remember is that itâ€™s your modem that is doing the hardest work when you connect to the Net. Whether youâ€™ve got an old PIII 500 or the newest PIV all its processing and pixel-shifting power (or lack of it) wonâ€™t make web pages download any faster. Your machine is at the mercy of a tangled global network of computers and the vagaries of a telephone line, so get used to it and get patient.

The only think that a fast computer will be able to do for you on the Internet is make your web browser software operate faster locally, saving you a few seconds here and there when you resize your browser window or load pages from your disk cache. To really start shifting data from the Internet onto your computer, you need one thing and one thing only â€¦#34; a superfast Asymmetrical Digital Subscribers Line (ADSL).

Modulator/Demodulator is the vital component that turns your bedroom-bound computer into an Internet-cruising speedboat. With the right choice of kit, you can laughingly leave others falling off their virtual surfboards in the wake of your twin outboard engines of information access supremacy. As long as you have a phone line into which to plug your modem, that is.

Why do you want a fast modem? Because the faster your modem goes, the faster you can download, the less time you can spend online, thus keeping your phone bills to a minimum and avoiding all sorts of family strife by hogging your homeâ€™s only phone line. Unless of course, you own a luxurious ADSL and you can make and receive phone calls while you are racing down the information super highway.

Did you know back in the day, Elvis, bell bottoms, Ford Sierras, Pentium ones and 56k modems ruled the roost. If youâ€™ve got an elderly machine like the one mentioned above or something slightly better, maybe even a Pentium III class machine, and all you want to do is send and receive email, look for information in Google to do your assignment so you can finish that degree you working on for the past ten years, and your budget is stretched thin, then you might consider a 56k modem. It will still get the job done.

You can opt for either an internal or external modem. Internal modems fit into one of your computerâ€™s PCI slots and stay out of sight and donâ€™t need their own power source. External modems connect via one of your computerâ€™s parallel ports and sit, complete with winking lights, on top of your beige box. Thereâ€™s no difference in what they can do.

So youâ€™ve got your modem installed. Good work. Now all you have to do is sign up with an Internet service provider and youâ€™re good to go. Once youâ€™ve set up an account with an ISP, you can dial straight into the Net whenever you want.

But once youâ€™re connected, youâ€™re on your own. Make sure you have an up-to-date antivirus or you wonâ€™t last more than seven minutes. Hackers will take you down faster than Muhammad Ali took down Leon Spinks. The phone bill meter is running, buddy, and thereâ€™s no virtual taxi driver in sight to chauffer you round the Internet sights.
